During our Banff trip, we stayed in the charming town of Canmore, Alberta, located just 20 minutes south of Banff. While exploring Canmore, we discovered Grassi Lakes and a scenic short trail, offering stunning views and a perfect opportunity to experience the area’s natural beauty. We visited Grassi Lakes toward the end of our trip and even after seeing the other famous Banff locations like Lake Louise and Lake Moraine, these smaller lakes did not disappoint. I would say this is one of those locations that is off the beaten path and is a hidden gem in my book.
Grassi Lakes Trail
- Distance 2.5 miles (Loop)
- Difficulty: Moderate
- Elevation Gain: 633ft
- Estimated Time: 1 to 2 hours
We took the Upper Grassi Lake trail on the path up and the Grassi Lakes Interpretive trail on the way back down to make it a loop.
These lakes were just so clear and reflected the trees and mountains like a mirror.

This photo and view is just so stunning, we could have sat here all day enjoying the view.

Such amazing views at the lakes.

On the way back down we were able to take a peak at Grassi Falls

Whether you’re a casual hiker or an outdoor enthusiast, Grassi Lakes is a must-visit destination in Canmore.
