2024 Year End Status of the Homelab

I wanted to share an update on the current state of my homelab. I built this rack over seven years ago when we constructed our house, and while it has held up well—especially considering it supports two servers—it’s not exactly the most aesthetically pleasing being built out of cheap wood.

The wire management looks more chaotic then it actually is, however I’m hoping to still clean it up this year. Despite the mess, everything has remained fully functional, proving that sometimes, practicality wins over perfection.

Hardware list

  • Rack (top to bottom)
    • Network patch Panel
    • Coaxial Patch Panel
    • TP Link – 24 port network switch
    • Tripp Lite
    • HP T620 and OPNSense (qotom q750g5) on self
    • Dell r320
    • HP DL380G8
  • Wall Mount on the right (top to bottom, left to right)
    • RF Coaxial Splitter
    • HD Home Run
    • TP Link – 8 port network switch
    • CenturyLink Optical Network Terminal (ONT)

Are wondering why there is so many wires? A number of those rolled up in the back are audio wires that are run throughout the house for a home audio system, unsure if we will actually get it setup, but wanted to get that done when we built.

I have a number of upgrades/updates planned for 2025

  • New server to replace the HP DL380, so I can use 3.5 inch drives instead of 2.5
  • I’m considering building a new rack, possibly improving the design and even staining it for a cleaner look.
  • I also want to rethink the layout, adjusting the placement of both rack-mounted and wall-mounted items to create a more organized and efficient setup.
  • Who knows what else?
