MX Linux 25 “Infinity” Review

Introduction

In this MX Linux 25 “Infinity” review, I share my first impressions, what I liked, and areas where MX Linux could improve. Released on November 9, 2025, MX Linux 25 is based on Debian 13 “Trixie” and brings major upgrades, including the Linux 6.12 or 6.16 kernel, Xfce 4.20 with improved Wayland support, updated Mesa 25 graphics, and a refreshed MX Tools suite for faster, smoother system management.

Desktop Environments

  • Xfce (Flagship), 4.20
  • KDE Plasma 6.3.6
  • Fluxbox 1.3.7

First Impressions and Performance

I booted MX Linux 25 from a live USB, just as I did for my Fedora 43 review, using the same older ASUS A10 laptop with 8GB of RAM. One thing I immediately noticed is that it runs slower than Fedora 43 on the same hardware. However, MX Linux offers better visual polish, even though both distributions use Xfce, and I find MX Linux’s overall look more appealing than Fedora’s.

Software

MX Linux ships with the 6.12.48 kernel from the Debian Stable repositories, while the Xfce AHS variants include the 6.16 Liquorix kernel.. For the desktop environment, I’m running Xfce 4.20, which continues to be lightweight and responsive.

The default browser is Firefox, which performs well for everyday browsing and even for writing this post. MX Linux also includes the standard Xfce utilities along with the LibreOffice suite, including Writer and Calc. You’ll also find several common applications preinstalled, such as Thunderbird, VLC, and Xfburn.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I prefer the Xfce experience in MX Linux over Fedora because it delivers a smoother and more visually appealing desktop environment. The About page also clearly states its support timeline, with updates planned until August 2028, which is a thoughtful detail. If you need an operating system for server use, I would suggest Debian or Fedora. However, if you want a solid and reliable desktop experience, MX Linux is definitely worth considering.
